Czech Opera Season in Ireland

Season of Czech operas from The Opera Theatre Company in 2002 will start in February with the Irish premiere of Janácek's popular The Cunning Little Vixen.

L. Janacek's - The Cunning Little Vixen - Opens Czech Season

Opera fans can look forward to a season of Czech operas from Opera Theatre Company in 2002, kicking off next month with the Irish premiere of Janácek's popular The Cunning Little Vixen. Janácek's fascinating blend of orchestral and vocal writing makes The Cunning Little Vixen by far the most lyrical and accessible of twentieth century operas. A celebration of life and nature, the opera tells of the adventures of a sharp witted young vixen cub who defies all men who want to tame her to explore life for herself in the forest. Through the Vixen's various escapades and encounters, the opera reveals just how like animals we humans really are!

The team that created OTC's acclaimed Flavio in 1994 is reunited: James Conway (Director), Joanna Parker (Set & Costume Design) and Simon Corder (Lighting Design) with the addition of Bernadette Iglich (Choreographer). The Cunning Little Vixen is conducted by Richard Farnes, whose recent successes include this same opera at ENO and Otello at Glyndebourne.

OTC's cast includes Irish singers Louise Walsh (Vixen), Victoria Massey, Joe Corbett, Paul McNamara and Michelle Sheridan, joined by Charles Johnston, Clarissa Meek, Paul Reeves and Debra Stuart.

This production uses Norman Tucker's contemporary translation of Janácek's own libretto, and an orchestral arrangement for 16 players by composer Jonathan Dove. The OTC Orchestra is led by Ireland's foremost musician, Michael d'Arcy.

Touring all over Ireland between 8 February and 2 March 2002, The Cunning Little Vixen opens in the Everyman Palace in Cork for 2 nights, and then continues on to Galway, Dublin, Kilkenny, Sligo, Enniskillen, Armagh, Derry and Mullingar. The two Dublin nights of Vixen sees the welcome return of OTC to the RDS (15 & 16 February). This is a new partnership with the RDS as part of the RDS Arts Initiative.
